Deanne Underwood

ARTIST BIO

Deanne Underwood is a fibre artist based in Edmonton, Alberta. Her richly textured felt artworks translate the light, movement, and quiet drama of Western Canadian landscapes into layered wool compositions.

Raised across Canada in a military family, Deanne has long been shaped by the vastness of the places she’s called home. Her background as a dancer and wellness practitioner informs her tactile sensitivity and rhythmic sense of flow — qualities that infuse her approach to fibre and form.

Working full-time under the name Prairie Girl Felting, Deanne has developed a signature process that bridges fine art and craft traditions. Her works have been exhibited across Alberta, including at the Alberta Craft Council Gallery, and are collected for their depth, colour, and sense of place.

ARTIST STATEMENT

As an artist, I draw inspiration from the spectacular landscape that surrounds me – the prairies, parkland, lakes and mountain ranges of Western Canada. Wool is my medium and I use a combination of needle and wet felting to craft artwork that is saturated with vivid colour and energy. My dimensional felt paintings are created using my own methods of layering, blending and texturizing fibre. My approach is a contrast between spontaneity and precision, reflecting the ever-changing, ephemeral sky and the more defined terrain I seek to capture. I often use locally sourced vintage frames which highlight the nostalgia and romance of the wool medium while offering pleasing contrast with the modernity of my work.
