ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Snake Bite Creations is the work of Natalie Ley, a lino printmaker based in Alberta. A 2019 Honours graduate of the Fashion Design program at Fanshawe College, Natalie’s background in textiles informs the precision, texture, and rhythm of her hand-printed work.

Originally from London, Ontario, Natalie relocated to Alberta in 2021 and has continued to develop her printmaking practice from her home studio. She carves, inks, and burnishes each print entirely by hand — sometimes pressing the paper with her own thumb — embracing the tactile, analogue nature of the process.

Her recent series of Alberta birds captures the character and personality of local species she encounters in both city and countryside. Through Snake Bite Creations, Natalie celebrates the slow, physical craft of printmaking and the beauty of the natural world that inspires it.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Printmaking connects me to something grounding and real. Every line I carve, every thumbprint pressed into the paper, is part of a process that resists digital shortcuts. I love that lino printing remains entirely human — carved, inked, and pulled by hand.

My work often draws from the natural world around me. Birds, especially those found here in Alberta, have become a recurring subject. Each one has a distinct shape and personality that I try to capture through mark-making — the tilt of a head, the energy of a wing, the spark in an eye.

With each print, I aim to share a sense of tactile presence: the sound of carving tools on block, the texture of ink, and the quiet joy of seeing an image emerge through touch and time.
